Onderzoek weeshuistoerisme

~ English translation below ~

September 2021

Research orphanage tourism

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs has commissioned a study into the extent of volunteer trips from the Netherlands to residential care institutions for children, such as orphanages. This research was conducted by Radboud University, Bureau Beke and Ecorys and released in Jan. 2021.

One of the main conclusions is that Dutch private initiatives (so-called small charities) play an important role in establishing or supporting residential care institutions for children, such as orphanages. Volunteer trips unnecessarily perpetuate residential institutions for children and can indirectly even lead to an offer of children (who are not in all cases orphaned).

The report gives us as a sector as a private sector plenty of food for thought, and so does the government. High time for both to pick up that gauntlet.

We have summarized the more than 70-page research report for you in a short video (in Dutch).
