This Radio El Mundo podcast (only in Dutch) is about current developments which are important for private initiatives in the Netherlands that work with vulnerable children in developing countries. On August 21, our chairman Monique Derrez, together with Patricia Nieuwenhuizen, coordinator Better Care Network Netherlands, spoke with podcast makers Menno van der Geugten and Ton ten Dam. They talked about the developments in family-oriented care worldwide, the Dutch NGO pledge #EveryChildAFamily, the research by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs into volunteer trips to projects with children and the relationship with private initiatives in the Netherlands.

The podcast can be listened to via various podcast platforms, such as SoundCloud.

Purpose of the Pledge
The basis for a child's right to grow up in a family is enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the UN Guidelines on Alternative Care for Children.

Research shows that more than 80 percent of children worldwide who live in residential care institutions such as orphanages have at least one living parent and/or other family members. With the right support, close relatives and family members could in principle take care of a child who would otherwise grow up in an institution. In addition, over 60 years of research show that growing up in an orphanage is harmful to children’s cognitive, emotional and social development. Children develop best in safe family environments.

By signing the pledge, the NGO's pledge to support children in families, not in institutions. Together the signatories call on other NGOs, companies, churches and schools to promote the rights of children by, for example, talking to fellow organizations about the advantages of family-based care. Children deserve families, not orphanages.

Signatories
Already 39 NGOs signed the pledge.

* We refer to the word 'institution' as mentioned in the ‘UN Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children’, page 5 - Art. 23
